Samsung has been one of the trendsetters in the low and medium levels smartphone market with a variety of devices available. The manufacturer seems to be taking this market segment quite seriously with the introduction of even more options especially now with the addition of the J1 smartphone. The phone is designed to appeal to customers in the middle to low end market and comes with some nifty features to get the demand going.
Announced at the beginning of the year, the Samsung J1 comes with optional dual SIM for users who are looking to take advantage of the flexibility provided by having two service providers. Below we will have a more detailed review of one of Samsung’s newest flagship.
The Samsung J1 comes with a simple design that closely resembles the Samsung Alpha line-up. It comes in three colours namely white, blue and black. The phone comes with a plastic cover under which the battery lies. The face is mostly covered by the 4.3 inch touch screen and below it you will find the normal Samsung soft keys. At the back, we have a camera flanked by an LED flash. As said the Samsung J1 bears a simple design, and at its price range this is enough to capture the market’s attention.
As stated, the Samsung J1 comes with a 4.3 capacitive touch screen display. The Multitouch 480 x 800pixel resolution screen has an average 221 pixels per inch. The display supports up to 16M colours for the best picture display at this price range.
On the performance front, the Samsung J1 runs on Android v4.4.4 (KitKat). It has a 1.2 dual core Cortex-A7 CPU and a Mali-400 graphics processor. The storage options are no better with a 512MB RAM and 4GB inbuilt memory. However, this can be improved upon with support for a 128GB micro SD card supported through the available micro SD slot.
On the camera front, the phone comes with a 5 megapixel primary rear camera and a secondary 2MP front facing camera for all those who are into selfies. Camera features include geo-tagging, face detection and touch focus for higher quality photos. The rear camera is assisted by autofocus and also comes with an LED flash for higher quality pictures taken in limited light conditions.
Connections supported on the Samsung J1 smartphone include a micro USB port, GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and FM Radio as well.
The phone comes with an 1850mAh Li-ion battery that is rated at up to 10 hours of heavy usage with 3G enabled; and up to 40 hours playing music on standby.
The Samsung J1 is definitely not designed for high-end users as it runs on a slower processor with low RAM, but it definitely does its part for moderate users in the medium and low-level markets.
